The Sound of Silence

Can you hear that?

That's the sound of NO PLANES!

I'm sure most people around the world will have heard the news. This:

(or something very like it) has sent a volcanic ash cloud from Iceland high across the heavens towards northern Europe. Because of the potential damage to jet engines (fans of Air Crash Investigation will have seen this for themselves) planes have been progressively grounded across the UK and our northernmost neighbours. Our air space is closed. And will be till at least tomorrow morning, maybe for as much as a week!

So the airports are empty.

For those of us under flight paths, it's been a very quiet day.

I remember how quiet the skies were when all flights were suspended after 9/11. I never realized how much I'd grown used to hearing and seeing planes and their contrails, till there weren't any.

There's something going on, seismically, with the earth, and it's starting to concern me.

Have to agree with JoJo on this one. In the meantime, enjoy the quiet!

Even the little airfield near us (which goes by the grand title of Oxford Airport) has been closed because of this.I'm so used to hearing the little planes buzzing about that it's strange not hearing them..

i asked my colleague yesterday if she noticed what was missing - my desk is by a massive window and i stare all day at the airplanes - very spooky seeing an empty sky

for all the news about grounded flights, what about the poor people of iceland who are affected?

i've got loads of friends and family who are stuck - hopefully my neighbours will be one of the last back - now that is one sound of silence i've enjoyed all week - and no balls

I feel really sorry for the people who are stuck in the airports. When I was visiting some friends a few months ago, I got stuck in an airport for a really long time because of a giant snowstorm. Sleeping on a cold, hard floor with incredible amounts of noise and lights is not fun.

I had no idea that the airports are closed, I was just wondering about the silence.

I kind of like it when Mother Nature reminds the Human Race who 'The Boss' is.
