In my head it makes sense that he would go back to working for the military. They would love to get their hands on a guy with his knowledge and education. And... they have a lot of use for his skills, where they would be appreciated. He would be working with other people who are just as dedicated to their work as he is. He would finely be able to feel at home and feel some job security. Which he greatly deserves.
