I didn't know!

Since I bought my new widescreen TV earlier in the year, I've been tweaking the screen-size controls. If you use the widescreen setting on a channel or programme that is being broadcast in the ordinary screen size, you get a squashed look. I never thought to check if the Sky+ box had screen size settings. I still haven't.

Well, whatever the charming young man who fitted my new box yesterday did to the settings, it pings itself into the appropriate screen size when you change channels. I was amazed to discover that Channel 5, which shows LOCI a year after Hallmark, is actually broadcasting in widescreen, and I didn't have to do anything to get it right. (If I'd seen your comment about Channel 5 showing them in widescreen yesterday, Diane, I wouldn't have had a clue what you were talking about.)

So something good has come from my mini-disaster.

I have a new Sky+ box, so I am ready for Lady's Man on Thursday.

Unfortunately Family Values is gone and I missed it. Endgame was last nigh on Hallmark. My Channel 5 copies of Season 6 are gone. And tonight is a Logan/Wheeler episode.

Off to be Equalized

Edward Woodward has died, aged 79.

He became a household name in the UK with his series Callan, then later he found international fame in The Equalizer, in which of course he appeared with our dear Vincent. He came to a hot and sticky end in The Wicker Man. In about 1970 I was lucky enough to see him at the National Theatre when it was at the Old Vic, playing Flamineo in John Webster's Jacobean revenge tragedy The White Devil.

He was married to Michele Dotrice (daughter of Roy, who played Zeus in the TV series of Hercules). Michele played Betty opposite Michael Crawford's Frank Spencer in Some Mother's Do 'Ave 'Em, a cult slapstick comedy show.

Night Stalker

After 20 years of burgling, sexually assaulting and raping elderly women, and some men, the so-called Night Stalker has been caught in Brockley, SE London. Though I cannot identify the street in the picture, there are a lot of railway lines and stations in the area , and the fencing and bushes on the right look like they are beside a street-level railway line less than a mile away from my house. The attacker used to cut telephone lines, disable fuseboxes, and use tools from the garden shed to break into his victims' houses.

Delroy Grant is 52, married with children, and a devout Jehovah's Witness. (Probably how he found some of his victims, I can't help thinking. A couple of them knocked at my door today, as they do far too often, and if one had been him, the many elderly people in my street who answered would no doubt have been put on his list.) He attacked up to 150 people in his 20-year reign of terror.

Well done our wonderful police for taking only 17 years in an operation designed to track the attacker. The 3 years you took to work out that this was a serial offender seem positively swift by comparison.

Cynical? Moi? Surely not.
