The Lions at Port Lympne

The lions at the zoo are Barbary, or Atlas, Lions. They come from north Africa, and have been extinct in the wild since the 1920s. Those from the King of Morocco's collection have formed the basis for the captive breeding programme since 1972.

Samira was bitten on the leg by her father when she was a few months old. She was left with nerve damage. Hydrotherapy has helped her regain some use of the affected leg.

Male lions can be such bastards...It's amazing any cubs make it to adulthood.

Thanks for the video Val.

So majestic, the kings of the jungle

It breaks my heart to see them
caged... Val one day you really should do a safari, it's quite wonderful

Thank you for sharing Val :-)

It's a shame to see them cgaed but when you know it's a choice between that and extinction suddenly it doesn't seem so bad.

Have you ever been to the Tiger Sanctuary on the Isle of Wight? We went a couple of years ago.Amazing to see so many big cats in one place

Poor Samira. Did the zookeepers say if they knew why her father bit her so bad? It is sad to see them in cages though, but as Eliza says, it's better than extinction.
