Quality!

That's what we have at Universal Channel UK. I wrote to them about the old "bitch gone in the teeth" quote, and have just received their answer.

No use of "bitch" regardless of context and meaning. Who decides it might be unsuitable and cause offence?

As for "It looks like you was watching..." well, if they can't employ people with knowledge of basic English grammar to answer viewer queries, they must not value us very much.

Dear Valerie

Thanks for getting in touch and apologies for the delayed response.

I’ve checked the schedule, and from the time you sent the email, it looks like you was watching Criminal Intent Season 2. Ep 3.

As it’s on at 7pm we have broadcast the daytime playable version. The use of the word ‘bitch’, regardless of the context, could be considered unsuitable and likely to cause offense within this daypart. However, we do take viewer feedback very seriously so please rest assured that I have passed your comments on to our compliance team.

Best regards

Lindsay

  1. 'you was watching'..aarrgghh!!! I hate it when people don't use proper grammer, even if I can sometimes be guilty of it myself. Was and were are 2 very different words, there is no excuse for getting them wrong

  2. The unfortunate truth is I hear language like that everyday. Yes there are times when I mangle the English language, as some of you have witnessed. However, its often as a result of being tired and/or failing to proof read, like when sending off a quick response to a blog or FB post. However, when responding to a formal complaint the writer should take the time to at least proof read. Notice I'm giving the writer in this case the benefit of the doubt and hoping that the error was inadvertant. Otherwise, what Eliza said...aarrgghh!!!

  3. I am very conscious of, correct use of the English language also as is my granddaughter. We were talking a couple days ago in the car and I confessed to having a problem with one usage, seems all my life, and that is well and good. She explained to me the useage and I don't know if I got it right ot not now but she said,"Grandma, I have a problem with lie and lay" which she comes across when she is writing her novel, so I guess everyone has some problem.

  7. Funny you should say that, JoJo - I sent her back an email saying that her mistake offended me more than "bitch" in the correct context would have offended most of the people she thought she was speaking on behalf of...that is, on whose behalf she thought she was speaking!
