Too Much

My neighbour is wonderful. We've lived next door to one another for well over 30 years. When her husband was alive, he was always doing work for me - building fences, pointing walls, plumbing in sinks - but he developed diabetes, which led to an infected sore, which led to an amputation from which he never fully recovered. This was a few years ago now, and finally she has decided to sell her house and move closer to her younger daughter. She doesn't have the best of health herself, and the house sale, which has been dragging on for months, had been very stressful for her. Finally she has a moving date - next Friday. But her elder daughter's husband was taken ill last week and admitted to hospital with septicaemia. As well as several operations, he was put into a drug-induced coma and put on life support in intensive care. He didn't make it. At age 53, with a six-year-old son, he died on Thursday night. I cannot imagine how they will all cope. It's just too cruel.

Wow, that is awful. My sympathies also. How did he contract the septicemia?

  3. There has to be a post mortem exam, but odds are on the hip replacement he had before Christmas. He went "private" rather than rely on the National Health Service. Just goes to show that private hospitals can be just as liable to infect you with fatal germs as NHS ones.

  6. My friend's brother died from sepsis he got after breaking his ankle. the hospital and doctor totally missed the infection. By the time he collapsed, it was too late. He hung on for about 6 months and died.

  8. My heart breaks for her and the child. I have a 6-year-old and he would be beyond devastated if something happened to Daddy ... I am so sorry for this family.

Hip replacements are a great thing...the only problems are developing clots and infections, as in this case. The Director of Nursing at the home I worked at had a knee replacement and had trouble with it. She never was the same and is not able to work now. Will your neighbor and friend still move in with her daughter? Seems her daughter needs her now more than ever. So sad.

  10. It's a different daughter, Nantz, and she's just moving into a house in the same street. The widowed daughter lives a few miles away, and has a strong support network of neighbours, thank goodness
