The Salton Sea

Not his greatest look, but a very cleverly-done role.

Given the roles he was playing around the same time as this film - Major Hathaway, Father Casey, Moriarty - and that Bobby Goren was only a short way into the future, I cannot see how the weight ups and downs can have happened. There just wasn't time!

  1. Pooh Bear was strangely likeable in a twisted kind of way....but that scene w/o his nose is just icky.

Well, there was a 2 YEAR gap between him making 'The narrows' and 'Staten Island' and them being released, so weight could have easily gone on and off if the dates you're working from are 'release' dates . I know the ones I have for his movies are 'release' not 'shooting'.

I like Pooh Bear...even if he's clearly barking mad

  3. Pooh Bear? What a character! Strange, I like Pooh. Just a couple of my fave lines -- "Look at the first lady. Radiant as ever." "I'm a dog, woof, woof, a fucking dog." There are others but cant' remember -- have to view film again.

As far as weight issue, hmmmm? Diane is right about make/release dates. But Val your point is well-made too because wasn't Salton Sea made/released in 2001? When was the release of CI? Because he was much thinner in early LOCI episodes.

  4. I like Pooh Bear..I guess he was supposed to be scarey, but I found him lovably funny, which probably says more about me than it does him

  5. Hey, you know how it is with guys. They quit drinking soda for a month and lose 20 lbs.

  6. I like the dog scene....probably my favorite. When he uses the two mitts for ears, I crack up! I heard one time that he improvised the scene.

  7. He truly made this role his own. I can't really imagine anyone else in it, except maybe for Jack Nicholson.

  9. Even though he is crazy in this movie, he is still so loveable! Yeah, Eliza, I kinda wonder about myself too! I like his strange characters! Which just goes to prove what a great character actor he is!

Salton sea is IMHO an underrated movie. Both Vincent D'Onofrio and Val Kilmer put on a spectacular show of their acting skills. However, Vincent's role as Pooh-Bear is fantastic. A symphatetic sosiopath who is at the same time funny and intimidating.
