Knowing how much you loved bugs of all kinds, I thought I 'd share this googled picture of a male stag beetle with you. They are rare and endangered, so I think you'd probably feel you had to find it a new home rather than destroy it, JoJo. Beautiful, isn't he? The Vincent D'Onofrio of beetles!
The female I found was only just over an inch long, and they don't have the antlers that give the species its name, but it's still a whole lot bigger than most beetles you find in a British garden.
The larvae are big, white, squishy things that live in rotting wood for several years before maturing into adult beetles, so in these days of gardens preened to within an inch of their lives, it's no wonder the beetles are becoming so rare.
OK, if I saw that thing in MY garden, or house, you would hear me screaming all the way in the UK. Seriously. I'd be climbing whatever I could to get away from it, whilst shrieking at the top of my lungs, "GET IT OFF ME!!! GET IT OFF ME!!". *shudders*
ReplyDeleteThanks Val. *shudders again*. If I have nightmares about giant insects with giant pincers, I'll know who to blame!!! lol ;P
Hey! It's Edgar! :-D
ReplyDelete(I want to find a pub quiz where they fire off obscure topics at you and you have 5 seconds to relate that topic, in some way, to the Life and Career of Vincent Philip D'Onofrio. I could do it, I could.)
As much as I love nature in all it's forms..finidng that in my garden would probably send me inside as fast as my little legs could carry me

I think it's kinda cute for a bug. LOL
ReplyDeleteval, i really love and appreciate the way that you share your knowledge about the world and obscure things with us, but...
ReplyDeleteEEEEEEYUUUUUWWWWWWWWWWW!
That's so cool!
ReplyDeleteEverything in nature has a purpose, even giant gross looking beetles! Personally I hate spiders but I leave them alone (except if they are in my house -then I'm a big sissy about it).
ReplyDeletebtw- I loved the backyard bird pictures! Please post more. I love my backyard birds!
ReplyDeleteYou guys should see the size of the spiders we have in Washington. Brian even screamed like a girl the first time he saw one. Starting now thru late fall, we'll be cautiously scanning floors and walls, "Spider Not" Spray and our special "Bug Sucker vacuum" at the ready.
