An Amusing Story from the Riots
I'm not always a great fan of the police. Too often they align themselves with right wing groups and the forces of oppression. I know a couple of the local community officers quite well, and have worked alongside school liaison officers, so I know there are good cops as well as those who just joined to throw their weight around.
A couple of miles from our huge new police station, there is another large station that has been around for many decades. It's not far from a retail park which houses the computer store where I bought this machine, a couple of electrical retailers, a carpet store and a furniture store.
During the rioting, other areas had experienced looting of electrical stores and arson of carpet stores. This is the tale of how disaster was averted by some resourceful coppers.

PC Gordon Murphy, 30, and five other officers had just two shields to protect themselves from the looters in Catford on Monday night.
The officers, based at Catford police station, charged – in a bid to scare them off.
The father of one, who lives locally, said: ‘Once they had thrown missiles at us, they then rushed directly towards us, shouting and screaming.
'Their intention was to run at us mob-handed to frighten us to run away. We decided, as they ran at us, to rush back at them, with only six officers running back at 40.
'The mad thing is, they all ran back, so we didn’t even have to make contact with them.
PC Murphy said that other local police officers had been deployed to deal with incidents elsewhere in the borough before they could come to the assistance of those in the retail park, whose stores include Comet, Carpet Right, PC World and Currys.
However he said that he felt 'proud' to have been part of the team who saw off the gang,
'When you police the local area, you get to know people, you do get quite protective of your area and have a pride in it.’
Ridwan Haibe, team manager at the Curry's shop, added, 'They did a fantastic job. We really appreciate the service that they have done for us. Six of them against 50 youths is quite impressive.'

Big Boy
No, not Vincent (though of course he is).
Not this adorable Brazilian tapir either, right up against the fence, and twitching its sleepy nose at its fans.
But Malchek, son of Balkash, the previous biggest Siberian tiger (and therefore biggest big cat, excluding fakes like Hercules the liger) in the world. And, as he's bigger than his dad, that makes him the biggest tiger, and the biggest big cat, ever.
I could watch him all day. Like that other big boy we all love.

The News I Won't Be Bringing You In Pictures
As I type, the sound of helicopters is dominating the area. Since the police shot dead a young man on Thursday, rent-a-thug and looters-R-us have been devastating parts of London, and tonight it is Lewisham's turn.
The TV news is showing burning vehicles in a back street I can recognise from the aerial pictures. The camera is panning along the High Street, where there are lines of cops, but very few civilians. Maybe after all it isn't the worst thing in the world that we have a vast police station in the middle of the High Street, as so far they seem to have prevented any serious problems. I do feel sorry for those stuck in the traffic jams caused by the roads being cordoned off.
Let's hope things remain uneventful.

A Tribute to Rowan Atkinson
This is a McClaren F1 car. A bit (putting it mildly) ostentatious. An indulgence, especially for those of us with an eye on the environmental impact of superfast gas-guzzling cars.
Well, clowning as Mr Bean has obviously seen Rowan Atkinson well. He has one of these cars. And not for the first time, he has crashed it - collided with a tree and a lamppost. He injured his shoulder and had to stay in hospital overnight. Diddums.

Meanwhile, our d'elicious Mr D'Onofrio's encounter with another iconic car had us all salivating.
