Belated Birthday Wishes, Eliza

VIncent wanted to say, "Happy Birthday" with a smile...

..and apologise for being late with his greeting.

He relied on Val for his information, but she has a head like a sieve.

I need a tonic!

Turns out I'm not tired - I'm actually sick! Only one thing I know could make me feel better...

Bobby for the Exhausted (again!)

I'm sorry, I'm too tired to visit all your blogs, and I can barely post on my own - especially as my computer shut down in the middle of one post to configure updates I hadn't asked for, then wouldn't connect to the internet until I'd rebooted twice.

So here's some Bobby tonic for us all.

Ghost?

Last night I had quite a restless night, first too hot, then too cold. I was lying on my left side with the duvet bunched up around me, not asleep, but not particularly alert either. I felt someone lie down behind me, sort of "spooning". You can bet I was alert now.

An arm went across my body and a hand twice squeezed my right boob. I held my breath. Why hadn't I heard someone come in? Why hadn't I felt them walk around the bed through the narrow gap at the foot?

Because there was no-one there.

Not again!

Some of you may remember just over a month ago when I was stuck in a traffic jam for nearly 4 hours. Well, thanks to the total incompetence of the police, I just had a scaled down repeat performance.

I was on the way to my friend Julie's house (she of the Bengal cats whose appearance at a cat show was where I was returning from last time) and she was going to take me to my friend Susanna's house (which is where I had spent the rest of the cat show day). The route suddenly ground to a halt and we were directed left at a roundabout because the road ahead was closed. I took the same alternative route as the other drivers, stuck in the same jam caused by the extra traffic volume. Just before we reached the road we would have been on before the road block, we were diverted - back to the original roundabout where we'd started! I calculated an alternative again which involved starting off in the wrong direction, got held up by a car being recovered from an accident, and eventually made it by an extremely circuitous route to Julie's. No more problems on the outward journey, though we arrived 40 minutes late at Susanna's.

On the way home, I went into Julie's to see her Bengals and her bunnies (and use her loo just in case...) then set off for home, confident that it would take about 20 minutes, as the crash (so I thought) of the morning would now have cleared. WRONG! The road was even more blocked off, but in the other direction. So why was it taking so long to get along the road (one hour, should have taken 5 minutes or so)? Well, at the end of the road - the original roundabout - there was very little traffic going anywhere, but what there was all seemed to have priority over ours, and we could only creep out a vehicle at a time. And where were the police? Were thay trying to direct the traffic so that the horrendous tailback could be reduced? Of course not. They put up their road closed signs and buggered off home.

Aren't our police wonderful?

By the way, the road closure was caused by a burst water main, so there will be nightmares on the road for days (weeks?) to come.

Lady-Killer

The motel ripper has to actually kill women to earn this title, but Vincent and his alter ego Bobby just knocks the ladies dead with a look, a smile, a frown, a gesture...

Hot and Smothered

There's been too much talk of the Black T-shirt Of Hotness and not enough pictures of it, so let's put that right.

Boning Up On History

Every summer I go to see my cousin June and her husband Mick down in Kent. They invite my friend Susanna along as an honorary member of the family since she did kitchen duty at my mother's funeral, giving me the opportunity to just sit around witht the family and chinwag.

This year, apart from a fantastic meal out (still can hardly move!) they took us to the town of Hythe. It is one of the Cinque Ports, towns which were given charters in the 12th century to take care of the naval needs of the monarch. They took us to St Leonard's Church. Like so many early churches it has been changed and added to over the centuries. It started as a Saxon church (ie. pre-Norman invasion of 1066). Some of the old rounded arches are still visible, but pointed arches are much more in evidence.

A raised path with a very low parapet wall takes you from the church entrance to the crypt, which has been used as an ossuary for hundreds of years. The vies from the path across the town to the English Channel is stunning.
There are 2000 skulls in the crypt. No-one knows why there are so few, given that there are 8000 thigh bones! The first bones were moved here in medieval times from the churchyard to make way for additional burials.
This huge stack of bones is higher than I am and very carefully arranged and closely packed.

There are skulls interspersed among the long bones at regular intervals.

This skull has clear signs of a trepanning. The person obviously survived having a hole drilled in their skull, because the healing of the bone shows that they lived on for some considerable time.
